New records
From August 2020 we have started adding records from non-Anglican churches, and this process will continue as more records, held by Jersey Archive, are digitised and indexed. Our database now includes buttons enabling a search within registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These records will automatically appear within the results of any search made from this page.

Origin of Surname
The name literally means 'of the rock', but more specifically it became a placename for many fortified summits. The commonest spelling in Normandy and northern France is Delaroque, whereas in southern areas Delaroche is more common.
It is not likely that the Jersey surname was derived from La Rocque on the island's east coast.
Early Records
Robert de la Rocque, or Robertus de Rupe, is mentioned in a close letter of 1215 as one of the hostages of Jersey.
There is a record of the name in Normandy in 1250, Johannes de Roqua appearing in the records of Lisieux, and 11 years later there is a reference to la ferme Erneys de la Roque.
The surname appears again in Jersey in the Assize Roll of 1309, with a mention of Raoul de Roke, who was a juror in St Saviour, as was Raoul de la Rocque, perhaps the same man, in the Extente of 1331.
Although Roche and its variants are generally considered in France to be of the same derivation as Rocque and its variants, the de la Rocque and Roche families in Jersey have distinct ancestries.
The Jersey family was influential from the early 15th to the early 17th centuries, giving to the Island a Bailiff, three Jurats and a Vicomte. One of the Jurats predates the trees shown below. He was Guille, or Guillaume, de la Rocque of St Clement, who was a Jurat, 1438-1465, with some sources stating that he was also Lieutenant-Bailiff. His elder daughter and principal heiress, Jeanette de la Rocque, married Guillaume de Hamptonne. A younger daughter and co-heiress, Michelle, married Drouet du Costil of St Clement, which family, in that branch, is now represented by the descendants of Benest Le Brocq.
A particularly notable branch of the de la Rocque family were Seigneurs of Saval, whose Trinity home was Le Menage du Rocquier, this being a corruption of their surname. Another property, perhaps owned by this same branch, was De la Rocque, in Mont au Prêtre, St Helier, where an ancient window lintel has engraved upon it a trefoil, this being a feature of the family`s arms.

Tips
The church record links above will open in a new tab in your browser and generate the most up-to-date list of each set of records from our database. These lists replace earlier Family page baptism lists, which were not regularly updated. They have the added advantage that they produce a chronological listing for the family name in all parishes, so you do not have to search through A-Z indexes, parish by parish.
We have included some important spelling variants on some family pages, but it may be worth searching for records for a different spelling variant. Think of searching for variants with or without a prefix, such as Le or De. To search for further variants, or for any other family name, just click on the appropriate link below for the first letter of the family name, and a new tab will open, giving you the option to choose baptism, marriage or burial records. You will then see a list of available names for that type of record and you can select any name from that list. That will display all records of the chosen type for that family name, and you can narrow the search by adding a given name, selecting a parish or setting start and end dates in the form you will see above. You can also change the family name, or search for a partial name if you are not certain of the spelling

New records
