The late Walter Le Quesne found that at least nineteen couples had asked him or Rachel Remon, his wife, to stand as godparents for their children. Such a demand is exceptional. Relatives, rich men and seigneurs were often chosen but Thomas was none of these. Parents of the newborn, in their choice of godparents were, and still are, often motivated by expectation of some collateral benefit in return. In the comparatively remote coastal regions adjoining so much de Gruchy land, one wonders what that could be
