Descendants of Philippe Gruchy

Gruchy of La Planque, Rozel, Trinity.

There was in the early 1990s, lying on the rafters of the farm outhouse behind the main house, a ship`s mast. It will have been the mainmast of a cutter or topmast of a larger vessel, such as a brig or barque

Gruchy family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Of La Planque (1849 Godfray Map), near Victoria Village, Trinity, as had, no doubt, been his father. He and his wife Anne are shown in censuses as farming there in 1841, as they were in 1851. At the latter date, the farm comprised house, outbuildings and 25 vergees of land. Their 13 year-old grandson Charles was also living with them, who was mistakenly entered by the enumerator as being their son. Philippe died in March 1856, aged 72 years. He is thus distinguisheable from Philippe Gruchy of nearby La Ruette, born in October 1784 who, in March 1856, would not yet have been aged 72
  2. Carpenter, then owner of La Planque (1858). From his absence in various censuses, he was likely to have been a Ship`s carpenter
  3. Carpenter
  4. Farmer
  5. Master Mariner. His godparents were neighbours from La Ruette, being Jean Gruchy and Sara Gruchy, his wife, who were probably relatives of Jean George`s grandfather, Philippe
  6. His 1st cousin
  7. Mariner, settled in Boston, Massachusetts on the 14th February 1862, becoming a United States Citizen in 1883. He died in Boston in 1919
  8. Settled in the USA
  9. Shipwright
  10. Marriage not found but it is attested to by church baptismal records
  11. Ship`s Carpenter
  12. Printer
  13. Seaman
  14. Named after his godfather and maternal uncle, Matthieu Gallichan, son of Abraham. Matthew Grouchy was a teenage Blacksmith, in 1861, St Helier. He lived in Canada and in North Carolina, before settling at Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa. He was a Railroad Foreman in the 1880 U.S. Census, born in the Island of Jersey, living with his wife and four children in Osceola, but was sick with “Dyspeptic”, which may have contributed to his early death in 1885: U.S., Find a Grave Index, at www.ancestry.co.uk; U.S. Censuses; U.S. Birth, marriage and death Indexes; U.S. Social Security records; U.S.Newspapers
  15. With descendants
  16. Lived and died in Clarke County, Iowa, as did his sister Edith Ann
  17. Godparents: Philippe Gruchy and Jane Bradley
  18. Note that John Abraham and his siblings Charles Philippe, Jane Rachel, Mary Ann and Georgiana seem to have either died at a young age, with burials not recorded by the Church of England, or migrated abroad, in common with other members of this Gruchy family
  19. Of La Ruette, Victoria Village, now the Eric Young Orchid Foundation
  20. Carpenter, living at home
