Gruchy family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

  3. Described, on marriage, as "daughter of Jean, son of Pierre." Her godparents had been Pierre Gruchy, son of Edouard, and Marie, his wife, this Pierre being her father`s 1st cousin
  4. Affiliation established by: RP 32/30 (1720): Sara Hamon sold her house and land on the Fief es Benests, St John, to her son, Pierre Gruchy. On 17 December 1726, Nicolas Gruchy, younger son of Pierre Gruchy, sold an inheritance to Pierre Gruchy, eldest son and principal heir: RP 34/130
  5. RP 49/218 (1767): Pierre Gruchy, eldest son and principal heir of the late Pierre Gruchy and of his widow Elizabeth Rose, shared an inheritance with his sisters Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Gruchy, and Sara

  9. Pierre Gruchy junior was, in March 1818, a candidate for the post of Constable of St John, his opponent being the sitting Constable, Jean Nicolle, a close neighbour and member of an influential family of wool merchants. In the election, Nicolle received 85 votes to Gruchy`s 75. The latter appealed on the grounds that many of those who had voted for Nicolle were ineligible. The appeal was turned down, but the matter dragged on into 1819 when, on the 25 May, the Court judged that Mr Nicolle should be allowed to be sworn in. Gruchy then appealed to the Privy Council, which decided on 22 June 1822, in favour of Nicolle, whose health was evidently affected by the outcome. He died six months later

American freezer ships had been given access to the once cod-rich waters and before long stocks had dramatically declined. People began to look elsewhere for employment. Reginald served in WW1 as a Private, Canadian Expeditionary Force, surviving to resume his pre-war career
  44. On volunteering for the army, Harold gave his previous employment as garage foreman. In the 1931 census of Canada, he was working as a clerk. His wife was named as Hazel and their six year old daughter as Isobel. He served in WW1 as a Private in the Canadian Expeditionary Force
