Simon family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Judging by the recurring use of St Martin Beaugies as godparents, Esther must have been from that parish, but hers is a missing baptism
  2. Godparents: Thomas Beaugie and his wife, who were probably from St Martin. St Helier-born Jean evidently settled in St Saviour shortly after the birth of his son Thomas in 1682
  3. A tree on the Simon family page, now amended, showed the English Jean Simon`s descendants issuing from a son born in 1667. However, the connection with the Beaugies and, in the next generation, the Machons can be viewed throughout the tree displayed on this page, among the descendants of Marie Marsh. Her marriage to Jean Simon in 1680 eliminates any possible sibling of the same name born in 1667, who would only have been 13 years old at that date
  4. Godparents: Thomas Beaugie and his wife
  5. Among the godparents of their seven children were Michel Machon and his wife, and Charles Simon and his wife
  6. Godparent, after whom he was probably named, Charles Poingdestre
  7. Among the godparents of their four children were Jeanne Simon, Jean and Elizabeth Simon, and Rachel Simon, wife of Elie Billot
  8. Twin. Godparents: Jean Simon and Jeanne du Feu
  9. Twin
  10. Godparents: Jean Simon and his daughter, probably Elizabeth
  11. It is likely that Jean was the master mariner of this name, commanding in 1800 the 64-ton brigantine Young Peggy. The maritime historian John Jean has no information about him after that date. He, his wife and sons appear to have left the Island shortly after 1801
  12. Godparent: Philippe Simon, uncle. He was a legatee named in the will of this uncle, dated 1832
  13. Godparents: Abraham Le Geyt senior and Jeanne Simon
  14. Godparents: Philippe de Gruchy and Marie Alexandre, his wife. Philippe was likely to have been the master mariner of this name, mentioned by John Jean, in Jersey Sailing Ships. His will, dated 1 November 1834, and proved on 24 May 1841, includes generous legacies to many nephews and nieces, some of his wife. Also featured are bequests to godsons and god-daughters, among others. Thomas de Gruchy, son of Philippe, and Abraham Le Geyt were appointed executors. De Gruchy, a maternal first cousin, was for many years a master mariner, owning vessels for the Southampton trade; Le Geyt was a paternal first cousin and fellow-parishioner, with whom he grew up. Le Geyt Farm was named after his family: D/Y/A/25/13, at Jersey Archive
  15. Anne Baudains was probably a third cousin of Philippe, whose aunt Jeanne Simon and her husband Abraham Le Geyt, were her godparents
  16. Godparents: Abraham Le Geyt and Jeanne Simon, his wife. Anne made her will in 1844, which was proved the following year. She was then living again in St Saviour, presumably as a widow. She and her husband, Pierre Le Breton of Trinity, had one child, a son Pierre, in 1806. It appears that he had predeceased his mother. Her principal legatee was her great-nephew, Charles Abraham Hamon: D/Y/A/26/37, at Jersey Archive
  17. Godparents: Charles Simon and Susanne Whittel, his wife
  18. Issue in St Helier nine children, the godparent evidence confirming the placement
  19. Godparents: Abraham Le Geyt and Jeanne Simon, his wife
  20. Master mariner. His godparents were Thomas de Gruchy and Rachel Remon, his wife. Thomas made his will in 1810, shortly after marrying, naming his wife executrix and providing for her. Their children had yet to be born. Marie proved the will in 1833: D/Y/A/22/74, at Jersey Archive. For ships commanded by Thomas Simon, see John Jean, in Jersey Sailing Ships
  21. Marie died in St Helier, where she had been living with her daughter Mary Ann`s family, aged 71 years and 10 months. She was described as the widow of Captain Thomas Simon
  22. She and her elder sister had for godparents Abraham Le Geyt and Marie, nee Mourant, his wife
  23. Baker, then cement manufacturer
  24. Godfather: Philippe Simon, uncle, and Anne, nee Baudains, his wife. As a widow, Jane was a lodging house keeper
  25. Ship`s carpenter/sailor
  26. Godparents: Michel Machon and his wife. Jeanne was probably married previously to Daniel Gallichan
  27. Twin
  28. Godparents: Jean Le Vesconte and his wife
  29. Marriage record not found. In St Saviour church baptismal records the couple are shown as godparents in 1762 of Rachel, daughter of Edouard Machon and Anne Simon, his wife, and in 1768 of Jean, son of Jean Hubert and Elizabeth Simon, his wife
  30. Charles was described in 1777, when godfather of his nephew Charles Le Breton, as of St Helier
  31. Buried as the wife of Charles Simon. The Charles Simon buried in St Saviour in 1767, on this basis, was Charles senior
  32. Godparents: Abraham Le Geyt and his daughter
  33. Godparents: Abraham Le Geyt and Jeanne Simon
  34. Godparents: Thomas Whittel and Elizabeth, his sister. He died in Trinity of rheumatic gout, on 6 October 1827. His will, in which he describes himself as Charles Simon, son of Charles, of St Helier, made in 1810 and proved in 1827, contains a legacy to the poor of St Helier, and another to his sister, Jeanne Simon, wife of Philippe Le Sueur. His wife, the residual legatee, was named as Esther Mourant: D/Y/A/20/103, at Jersey Archive
  35. Godparents: Pierre Simon and Marie Simon, his sister. On this basis, Pierre Simon has been included, provisionally, in generation 2
  36. Among the godparents of their seven children were Philippe de Gruchy and Elizabeth, nee Le Geyt, his wife, Anne Machon, and Charles Simon, who was by 1777 living in St Helier
  37. Placement based upon his choice of Thomas Beaugie, who was also chosen by others in this family and generation, as godparent for his daughter Rachel. There is also a 1654-1664 gap in this Simon family`s baptismal record; they may have lived some years in England. To have married in 1679, he would have to have been born in the gap, probably in about 1656-1659
  38. Godparents: Jean and Jeanne Simon. Esther was named after her grandmother, Esther Beaugie, who was probably dead by this date
  39. Godparents: Thomas Beaugie and Marie Cabot, his wife
  40. Tentative placement, on 1698 du Hurel godparent evidence
  41. Susanne Simon, widow of Nicolas Gruchy was in 1698 a godparent, with Pierre Simon, of Daniel du Hurel
  42. No baptism has been found for Pierre, unless he recorded as the son of Jean Simon, in St Brelade in 1670. There is no specific evidence that Jean Simon and Esther Beaugie lived in St Brelade at this time. In 1737 Pierre Simon and Marie Simon, his sister, were godparents of Pierre Simon, the son of Charles Simon and Anne Le Vesconte, above. Marie can be identified, so Pierre is likely to have been born between 1654-1672, during which years there are gaps in baptism records for children of their parents. He was also godparent in 1698, with Susanne Simon, widow of Nicolas Gruchy, of Daniel du Hurel, son of Richard and Marie Simon
  43. GP: Thomas Beaugie and his wife
