Esnouf family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Roger Esnouf is shown in the Extente (1528) as owing the Crown an annual 2 Quartiers, I cabot, and a separate 5 sous herbage. The Extente (1607), 84, reveals that the latter sum was owed by Roger "in the right of his wife, the daughter of John Journeaux." The 1607 Extente also shows both sums as being then due from Roger`s successor "Jean Esnouf, son of Noel, for Roger Esnouf...." Noel Esnouf, who will have lived in the years between the two Extentes, and thus does not feature in person, was probably the son of Roger. Jean is clearly stated to be the son of Noel. Jean presumably died without issue, as these identical sums were being paid in 1668 by Thomas Esnouf (1564-1604/) son of Simeon, on his behalf- "for Jean Esnouf, son of Noe." Thomas was thus probably a nephew of Jean, in which case Simeon will have been Jean`s by then deceased brother
  2. "Jean Esnouf, son of Noel" owing the Crown the abovementioned sums in 1607
  3. Successor, probably brother of Jean Esnouf, as his son Thomas was paying the above sums "for" "Jean Esnouf, son of Noel Esnouf" in 1668
  4. "Thomas Esnouf son of Symeon paying the Crown annually 5 sous re herbage, for Jean Esnouf son of Noe": Extente (1607), 79 and also 76 re the 2 Quartiers, 1 cabot
  5. Marriage entry confirms Sara's father/grandfather
  6. This descent was previously attached to Nicolas, then moved to his brother Jean, based on an inaccurate marriage record transcription. The research we have done into early St John registers has now revealed the marriage record for Nicolas and Elizabeth Le Goupil and the baptism of their son Josue.
  7. Marriage record not found
  8. Mother not named in Trinity baptism register
  9. This Jean was previously shown here as the husband of Susanne Hubert, with a descendant line. We have not found a baptism record for a Jean Esnouf in Trinity in 1701, nor for a Jean, son of Philippe. There are also no baptism records for Esnouf showing a Hocquard as mother. We believe that the husband of Susanne Hubert was born in 1705, the son of Jean Esnouf and Elizabeth Horman, as shown in Descendants of Thomas Esnouf
  10. Pierre senior`s birth predates the earliest surviving St John baptismal register (1594). The third child, as here shown, of a father born about 1544, his birth will have been circa 1580. He was described, on marriage in 1610, as "son of Simon". He appears to have ended his days living in Trinity with his son
  11. Pierre Esnouf, who settled in Trinity, is described on baptism in St John in 1611 as: "Pierre, son of Pierre Esnouf, son of Simon, and Marie Pinel". His godfather was Jean Pinel, son of Collas
  12. Godparents: Jean Giffard, Centenier, and his daughter
  13. Godparents: Josue Giffard and Elizabeth Le Feuvre
  14. Although married in Grouville, that parish`s register states that both parties were from Trinity. They later moved to St Helier
  15. Of La Porte, Rue du Becquet ès Chats, Hautes Croix; Vingtenier of Ville à L`Evêcque, in 1710
