Esnouf family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. "Thomas Esnouf son of Symeon owed the Crown annually 5 sous for herbage, for Jean Esnouf son of Noe": Extente (1607), 79 and also 76. Note: Extentes have, on other occasions, viz. Bertram, cited those as owing annual payments to the Crown who were, in fact, deceased. Clearly, updating the record was not a priority. This entry, however, establishes Thomas as being the son of Simeon Esnouf. The latter is believed to have married Thomasse, nee Le Breton, of St John. Simeon was the son of Noel Esnouf (1515- ) and Katherine, nee Langlois, daughter of Guillaume Langlois and Katherine
  2. Constable of St John, 1626-1632. The Jersey historian, the late Revd. JA Messervy wrote that "Simeon Esnouf was eldest son of Thomas Esnouf and of Genette, his wife, sister of William Le Marinel. Simeon Esnouf.. was one of the leaders of the Jersey Parliamentary party and was appointed Jurat by Cromwell; but he died before being able to be sworn and was buried in St John, 1st June 1655": ABSJ, VI, 395
  3. Constable of St John and Jurat
  4. Constable of St John, 1655-1660: Ibid., 396
  5. Josue Esnouf, "son of Thomas, son of Thomas, son of Simeon" owed the Crown in 1749 three Quartiers, seven cabots of annual wheat rente, four cabots being "for the fee called Le Fief Esnouf". Eight others in St John and a St John`s originaire in Trinity also owed the Crown different sums for [land held on] this St John fief, which owed the Crown an annual total of 11 Quartiers and 5 cabots. In the Extente of 1668 these various sums were mostly lumped together under the Prevôt of the fief. Josue, as a bearer of the fief`s name, was probably a descendant of the original holders, after whom the fief was named: Extente (1749), 60

  8. The sisters of Thomas Esnouf went to court to achieve from him a just division of their inheritance, on two occasions, which supplies the names of their spouses, and places Elizabeth, whose baptism is missing. Also present was an unnamed eldest daughter, whose husband was given as Jean (Boelle?): CH (7/5/1668)
  9. Marriage record not found, but confirmed by baptisms below. The mother is variously named as Anne, Jeanne and Susanne. There is also a marriage of Thomas Esnouf to Douce de Gruchy in Trinity in 1786, but although many online trees show him as the son of Jean and Rachel Le Masurier, this seems highly unlikely. The two Thomases were both having children over an extended period in the 1790s. It has been suggested that the death dates for Thomas and Anne are both too late and we are investigating further

  43. Sea captain. Died at Rio de Janiero. We are not absolutely certain that Jean fits into the tree here, but it seems likely. 'Captain John Esnouf (son of John, son of John) married Elizabeth Le Rossignol, daughter of Edouard Le Rossignol and Elizabeth Esnouf (sister of Pierre Le Rossignol, sister-in-law of Mary Gillespie' - from online tree. However, this conflicts with Jean's marriage record, which shows him as the son of Laurent. If this Jean is not the sea captain, he may be the carpenter who married Marguerite de La Cour in St Helier in 1845
  44. John and Edward Esnouf went to Quebec to help their uncle, Peter Le Rossignol, at Lenfestey's dry goods store. They found the climate and the store trying and returned to Jersey. John died on the return trip. Edward recovered and lived on his farm at St Mary
