1908 First cinema opens in New Street
1915 Jersey Overseas Contingent leaves to fight in World War One
1919 Industrial unrest and threat of a general strike
1920 Jersey asked to contribute to British defence costs after First World War. Island resists any UK "tax" and makes voluntary payment of £300,000
1921 Visit of King George V and Queen Mary
1934 First passenger aircraft lands in St Aubin's Bay
1936 Accession of Edward VIII and George VI
1937 Jersey Airport opens
1919 Women over 30 get the vote
1940 Invasion. Five-year German Occupation starts
1944 First visit of the Red Cross ship Vega to feed starving islanders

1948 Composition of States changed. Rectors and Jurats removed and replaced by Senators and more Deputies
