Historic Environment Record entry

Listed building

An interesting group of late 19th century commercial, industrial buildings originally comprising house, office and stores, with imposing and dignified frontages. Retains exterior historic character.

The first buildings on the site appear to have been built circa 1860-66. No 8 is described as the house with lean-to on the west side, which was later developed as No 9 - completed between 1901-05.

An integral row of three-storey buildings forming a continuous frontage of seven bays. These buildings correspond with the warehouse at 10 Commercial Street and form an historic group, with the Esplanade side being the 'house' and offices and the Commercial Street side as the 'yard' with outbuildings, stores. No 8 is three-bay, three-storey. Pitched slate roof set back behind parapet. Corniced chimneystack on west party wall. Painted render walls with rusticated quoins. Moulded cornice and shallow parapet. 16-pane sash windows above, with render effect 'skirts', stepped rusticated voussoirs and vermiculated keystones. Cast iron hopper head and downpipe. No 9 has a roof behind moulded cornice and shallow parapet. Painted render walls, over rusticated rock faced granite ground floor. Rusticated quoins. Ground floor has four openings, from east a tall, wide vehicular opening with cart kerbstones, two wide openings flanking a door. First floor and second floor have windows within rusticated architrave surrounds with flat hoods. Cast iron hopper head and downpipe shared with No 8. Moulded panel over entrance with lettering 'Howard House'.
