Pallot and Sayers family album

Pallot and Sayers family album

in their garden at 6 Belvidere Terrace
An album of negative images of Pallot and Sayers family members was given to the Jersey Evening Post, and passed to Jersey Heritage when the newspaper's photographic archive was deposited at Jersey Archive. Many of the pictures were taken in about 1921 in the garden of 6 Belvidere Terrace, Millbrook, [1] the home of Henry Sayers and his wife Alice Jane, nee Labey.

Although the album is referred to in the Jersey Archive online catalogue as 'may relate to the Sayers family' it is very clear that it does, and we have been able to confirm the identity of most of the individuals in the photographs. The album appears to have been assembled by John Pallot, grandson of Henry and Alice, and the captions to the photographs have frequent references to 'grandpa' and 'grannie'.
The images are dated 1917-1921 by Jersey Archive, with some estimated to individual years. We believe that most of the images on this page were taken in 1921, or shortly before.
We have assembled a family tree below, which shows that Henry was born in Sussex in 1850 and moved to Jersey where he met and married Alice in 1875.
They had three children - sons Henry William and Herbert George, and a daughter, Alice Annie, who married John Pallot in 1902. Their son John Herbert was born in 1904 and Alice died the following year.

Notes and references
- ↑ Jerripedia editor Mike Bisson recognised the layout of the garden immediately.
- 'After a short time living with my mother's parents at 13 King Street, when she and my father brought me back to Jersey in 1949 - I was born in Nicaragua - we moved to 3 Belvidere Terrace, where we had a flat occupying half the three-floor building. When my grandfather died in 1953, my grandmother joined us and we moved two doors down to No 1, where we occupied the whole of the house, and had more room with the arrival of my younger brother.
- 'When I discovered the pictures taken in the garden of No 6 in the Jersey Heritage website I first thought that they had been taken in No 1, but quickly realised that the layout of the gardens was identical. I spent happy years in that garden and in the field behind the house stretching down to Victoria Avenue (since developed) and I remembered the garden layout, with wash room and large lean-to greenhouse as if it were yesterday, rather than 70 years ago.
- 'The property is correctly identified in the Jersey Heritage catalogue as 'Belvidere Terrace', although it appears in many records as 'Belvedere', the normal spelling, which is what we used as a family when we lived there. But 'Belvidere' is confirmed by the name in large lettering on the front facade of the terrace.
