Payments to privateers
in French prisons

Not every privateer captain or crewman returned to Jersey with a prize ship and captured cargo which made him rich. Others lost battles at sea and ended up in French prisons

At the end of 1806, 258 Jerseymen captured from their privateers were languishing in French prisons. They would not survive without financial support and the States voted a sum for their sustenance. Considerable sums were paid out during 1807 and on 12 February 1808 the Gazette de l'Ile de Jersey devoted its front page to a list of the men and what they received.
