Who was Edouard Hubert's father?

This discussion note was submitted on 16 December 2016 by Edward Hubbard (7th great-grandson of Edouard's great-grandson, Philippe Hubert / Philip Hubbard, who emigrated to Maine about 1690)

Although the 10 August 1562 St Saviour baptism record for Edouard Hubert does indeed list his father's name as Michel, there is good reason to doubt this.

(1) I have found no other records pertaining to a Michel Hubert himself, nor do any other Hubert baptisms list him as the father.

(2) His name does not recur in subsequent generations of the family.

(3) In this tree it is stated that his widow (name not given) remarried to Edouard Gallie in 1545 - but that was 17 years before Edouard Hubert was baptized.

(4) Simon Hubert (born about 1500) had two sons besides the Jean (born about 1520) who is given in Descendants of Simon Hubert as the father of Edouard (1562- ). They were Pierre ( -1557) (St S) and Edouard ( -1582) (St S), as found in Simon's will by earlier researchers. Jean (born about 1520) could well have named a son after his brother.

(5) Jean (born about 1520) has a son Etienne who was baptised in 1557 in St Saviour and was buried there in 1638. In a deed dated 23 October 1619, this Etienne (who had not married) conveyed his property in St Saviour (at Maufant) to Estienne Hubert fils Edouard, who was the Etienne who was baptised in the parish on 21 April 1591. This was clearly one of several family transactions that took place at about the same time. (Etienne snr's sister Jeanne sold her inheritance to him that same year, and Etienne jnr's sister Colette conveyed her inheritance to him that year as well.) This strongly supports the case for identifying Edouard as a brother of Etienne snr and Eduard's son Etienne jnr as a nephew (and namesake) of Etienne snr.

(6) In an act of March 1638, Jean Hubert and Etienne Hubert (sons of Edouard - the former baptised in St Saviour on 16 February 1588) revoked the will of their recently deceased uncle, Etienne snr

(7) Finally, the baptism of Edouard in 1562 falls neatly into the gap between the St Saviour baptisms of Jean's children Jeanne and Priscille on 22 April 1560 and 25 May 1564, respectively.

All these facts strongly indicate that Edouard (1562- ) was the son of Jean (c1520) rather than Michel. Inclusion of the latter's name in Edouard's baptism was, therefore, probably a recording error - an unusual, but far from impossible, occurrence.

Editor's note

We have been unable to resolve the issue of Edouard's father. As Edward Hubbard says, the baptism register (now reproduced here, with the entry highlighted) clearly shows his name as Michel. Although there are no other church records for Michel, but it would not be expected to find a baptism or marriage record this early - the baptism in 1562 was only 22 years after St Saviour records commence.

There is another record of a Michel Hubert, as shown on the Hubert family page. Bennet, Michel and Symon are mentioned in the Jersey Chantry Certificate of 1550.
