Remon of St Peter

This tree was added to the site in 2014 and expanded by Guy Dixon the following year and in 2023.

The families of brothers James Marett Remon and Thomas Charles Remon were transposed in earlier versions of this tree. We now believe that they are correct

Remon family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Two Jean Remons were presenting children in baptism at St Peter, between 1627 and 1645. The first Jean presented his daughter Marie Remon for baptism in 1627, followed by Pierre in 1630. The next Jean Remon`s family will have started shortly after his marriage in St Peter in December 1632 to Anice Payn. In June 1634 Jean, son of Jean Remon was baptised, as was Nicolas in 1634, another Marie in 1638 and Sara, six months later. The latter was described as "daughter of Jean, son of Pierre", being possibly born to a second marriage of her father. Collette Remon was the last, in 1643. Of these children, Jean, Nicolas and Collette have godparents associated with early generations of Nicolas` descendants, and as such feature here. Court records and the Jersey Land Registry will clarify the issue and take the tree further back. One of these Jean Remons was a Sermenté in St Peter for the 1668 Extente. What is certain, is that Nicolas (generation 2) was "son of Jean". Of likely significance, is a deed at the Jersey Archive, dated 1644, which mentions the lease of a field in St Peter, on the Fief du Roy, to one of the Jean Remons, described as being the "son of Nicolas". The latter will have been born about 1570: L/C/111/A3/83
  2. Christened in June 1634, Jean was perhaps born some months earlier. His godparents were "Jacques Balleine and his wife", who was Rachel Remon, whom he married on 7th November 1632, at St Peter
  3. Godparents: Thomas Sceale and Marie Remon, the former from the property now adjoining the Co-op, called La Fosse, in St Peter. His land included the triangular orchard upon which Abraham de Gruchy built, in 1818, his new home and business, when it was still called Le Jardin de Seale. Nicolas Remon was of Greenhill, St Peter where his syllabic initials and those of his wife are engraved upon two corbels: "NRM" and "SDM"
  4. Seigneur de Ponterrin: ABSJ V, 375
  5. Godparents "Dumarest and his mother"
  6. The date of this marriage has not yet been found. However, their son Nicolas Le Boutillier had as godparents in 1689, Mr Nicolas Remon and Mse Sara Dumaresq, and their daughter, Marie Le Boutillier, had for godparents in 1691, Mr Richard Dumaresq and his wife. "Mse Marie Remon" was buried in July 1731 as the "widow of Mr Nicolas Le Boutillier", who died two months previously
  7. Centenier of St Peter 1698-1715; Captain in the Militia, 1697: ABSJ, VI, 253
  8. Seigneur of Avranches. The two children of this marriage, in marked contrast to those of the previous marriage, each had maternal godparents. Edouard Marett (1784) had as godparents, the Revd. George Bertram and Dlle Marie Remon, his wife, and Elizabeth (1786) had Mons. Edouard Remon and Dlle Marie Dauvergne, widow of Mons. Edouard Remon. Both parties, at the time of this second marriage at St Saviour, were of St Brelade
  9. If Jacques survived childhood, he may have been the Jacques Remon who chartered for three months, together with Nicolas Fiott, a vessel to go to Newfoundland in June 1742: L/C/88/A/12, at the Jersey Archive. His godparents in 1698 were Jacques Remon and his wife. It has not yet been possible to identify Jacques, the godfather
  10. Godparents: Mons. Dumaresq and Dlle Grandin
  11. Merchant and Shipowner at St Aubin. Constable of St Brelade, 1758-1769; Lieutenant-Colonel in the Militia, 1760. The placement of Edouard agrees with the findings of the respected Jersey genealogist, the Rev J A Messervy: ABSJ, VI, 253
  12. Merchant and shipowner at St Aubin; master and owner of two ships, in 1782-1785 lists, including the 70-ton brig Industry. Constable of St Brelade, 1779-1782, Colonel in the Militia
  13. Of St Aubin, Merchant and Jurat
  14. Seigneur of Diélament
  15. Thom Mallet and Jeanne Remon, his wife, had children baptised in St Brelade, where he had settled, between 1818 and 1825. He was in 1820 a Lieutenant Militia
  16. MA, Rector of St Clement, 1777-1787; of St Brelade, 1788-1818; of St Martin, 1818-1829; Vice-Dean. The marriage entry has not been located but is supported by Remon godparents in 1790, St Brelade, and by J B Payne An Armorial of Jersey, 44
  17. Merchant and shipowner at St Aubin; owner of three ships, in 1790-1792 lists, one, at least, of which was in the Newfoundland trade: J Jean, Jersey Sailing Ships, (Chichester: Phillimore and Co., 1982), 61-74 (lists), 48. Constable of St Brelade, 1800-1809; 1814-1817. Perhaps in his youth, the Master of this name, in 1778, of the 160 ton, 6 gun, Jersey brig Triton. Messervy thought he was the Jacques who was a Major, Jersey Militia Artillery, which seems most likely

  20. Later Rear-Admiral RN

  22. Seigneur of Avranches
  23. Merchant, living in Cape Cove, Gaspé, having first arrived there in 1842. In the 1861 Gaspé Census, he features as a merchant, at the same address as his brother, Thomas Charles Remon, who was also a merchant. In 1871, he was the Enumerator for the Gaspé East, Cape Cove District, for that year`s census. At the same address was 62 year-old Thomas Savage, Merchant, and 17 year-old Philip de Gruchy, Agent, both born, as was he, in Jersey. He died in 1904 at Percé: Canadian Immigration Records Part 1 (1901); 1861 and 1871 Censuses, Gaspé East

  25. Buried at Percé as Marguerite Remon
  26. Merchant in Gaspé, Canada, as above
