Descendants of Philippe Billot



This tree was added in 2021 by Mike Bisson to show the ancestry and descendants of the Billot family of Holmdale, St Martin. Four generations of the tree were previously shown in two other Billot trees in the website, but it was found that they did not fit there. There is considerable confusion in online trees surrounding the families of two Philippe Billots in the late 18th century. One, born in St Martin in 1770, married Francoise Godfray and their descent through ten children is well documented. The other, at the head of this tree, was born in Trinity in 1771 and married Elizabeth Godfray, possibly Francoise's sister. This Philippe died at sea soon after the birth of their first and only child, also Philippe, and it seems that the child was never baptised. Elizabeth never used her married surname from then on. She built a new house for herself and her son, at a property formerly known as La Gaupette

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. On retirement he returned with his wife to Jersey, where he became Commissioner of Appeal for Income Tax, 1942-1946. In 1945 he was elected Jurat and in 1948 Senator in the reformed Jersey States, in which he headed the Finance Committee.   16. ↑ Commander, RNR. Mary Billot wrote that he first went to sea as an officer cadet on HMS Worcester, the Thames Nautical Training College. He joined the Port Line, gaining his Master`s ticket in 1935, when he moved to the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company. As an officer of the Royal Naval Reserve, he was mobilised in 1939 and assigned as gunnery officer to HMS Worcestershire, an armed merchant cruiser. Promoted to Lieut-Commander in 1940, he was given command of HMS Hartland, on convoy escort duties. With her sister ship HMS Walney, Hartland was given the task of ramming the boom at Oran, prior to the North African landings in November 1942. Walney was sunk but Hartland, repeatedly hit by point-blank fire, which blinded Commander Billot in one eye, smashed a shoulder and caused him to receive a bullet in the leg, rammed the boom successfully as Billot, on hands and knees, said "I am going through", ordering full speed ahead. Officers and crew, including the wounded, were given the command to abandon ship, before Billot finally lowered himself painfully by his one good arm into one of the ship`s boats. They were then captured by the Vichy French and imprisoned, before being released by advancing United States forces. He was awarded the DSO in 1943 for his "outstanding bravery and enterprise". His injuries prevented him from receiving a further command, but he was naval control service officer (Ramsgate) until 1947.
