Jersey Advocates
1523-1937

Francois Godfray, one of the most famous 19th century advocates

The number of Advocates of the Royal Court of Jersey was limited at any one time to six, until 1860. They were chosen, without any test, by the Bailiff; but in that year the Bar was thrown open to any British subject who had lived ten years in the island and possessed the necessary English or French diplomas, or had passed a local law examination

This list was compiled by the Rev J A Messervy, librarian of La Société Jersiaise and published in the Societe's Annual Bulletin in 1920, the year of his death, and the following year.

He noted that names of Advocates were only available from the early 16th century, but there was no doubt that the role existed from the beginning of the 14th
