States of Jersey Deputies

Deputies were introduced to the States of Jersey in 1857 to increase the number of elected representatives. This list, produced by Ralph Mollet for the Annual Bulletin of La Société Jersiaise in 1938, includes parish and district representatives to the middle of the 20th century. Research is currently being undertaken to bring the list up to date.

Before the introduction of Deputies, the States consisted of 12 Jurats, elected island-wide for life, 12 Rectors appointed by the Crown and 12 Constables, elected for three years.
Candidates for the 14 Deputies' seats - three in St Helier and one each in the other parishes - had to be British subjects aged 20 or older and 'enjoying civil rights'.

The first elections were held on 12 January 1857 and the new States sat on 29 January. In 1907 St Helier was given three more Deputies and split into three electoral districts. In 1924 women over the age of 30 were allowed to stand
