St Helier town buildings index

St Helier town buildings:
Main index

Our ongoing major project is to include more information in our profiles of old Jersey houses and to greatly expand the number of houses featured.
Our index (link below) mainly lists houses in the country parishes, with very few historic properties in the towns of St Helier and Gorey Village included.
Now we are building this separate index for St Helier town centre properties
Only those addresses shown in blue have a profile page. Those shown in red will be created in the coming weeks and months. The profiles for those properties with a blue link may also not yet be complete, particularly when the link is to an old page showing details of the commercial history of a property.
Properties are listed street-by-street, in alphabetical order. There will be a limited amount of overlap between this index and the A-Z index of country houses, on which some properties in the town centre with individual names are shown.
Details of the town's historic properties, the majority of which now have protection as 'listed buildings' are largely drawn from Jersey Heritage Historic Environment Record website - HER, launched in 2020 to provide a guide to Jersey's listed buildings and other important heritage sites throughout the island, including Occupation defences, archaeological sites and other historic structures.
This is a much-needed official source of information, although it does concentrate on structural details of houses (much of the fine detail of which we omit from our profiles) rather than their history. What history it does contain is largely copied from the two volumes of Old Jersey Houses, often complete with errors. The Jersey Datestone Register provides another source of information on the families who owned and occupied Jersey houses and it corrects many of the mistakes in Old Jersey Houses.
While we do not claim that our profiles are error-free, we hope that they are a considerable improvement on what is to be found in earlier sources. We have attempted to avoid speculation, to concentrate on factual information, and to highlight the many places in which our information differs from what has been previously published.
It should be noted that there are many old buildings in St Helier which have been given listed status but no information is provided on their HER pages. Other town buildings which have been rebuilt in the 20th or 21st century are not listed, nor included in HER. They do not appear in this index but a profile containing the history of traders may be available linked from the street page.
